Cracked screen? What to do before it gets worse

A hairline crack across the corner looks harmless, so it's tempting to live with it. The problem is that a small crack rarely stays small — and what's underneath the glass is the expensive part.

Why a small crack is a big deal

The glass you can see is only the top layer. Beneath it sits the display and the touch sensor, and a crack gives moisture, dust, and pressure a way in. Left alone, a corner chip can spread into the touch area, create dead spots, or let in enough moisture to damage the screen permanently — turning a glass-only repair into a full display replacement.

Protect it in the meantime

If you can't get it fixed right away, a screen protector or even a strip of clear tape over the crack keeps shards in place and slows the spread. Handle the phone gently, keep it out of pockets with keys, and avoid temperature swings that flex the glass. And back up your data now, while the screen still responds — if the touch layer fails, getting your photos off becomes much harder.

Don't wait too long

The single best way to keep a screen repair cheap is to handle it while it's still just glass. Once the crack reaches the display or the touch stops responding, the cost jumps. If your screen is cracked, it's worth getting a quick quote sooner rather than later.
