A good backup turns a repair from nerve-wracking into routine. Most repairs never touch your data — but a few minutes of prep means that even in a worst case, your photos, contacts, and messages are safe.
The fastest route is iCloud — connect to Wi-Fi, plug in, and let it back up overnight from your settings. If you want belt-and-suspenders, also back up to a computer, which captures everything in one local file you control. Either way, make sure the backup finished and shows today's date before you hand the phone over.
Android backs photos up through Google Photos and settings and contacts through your Google account — check that both are switched on and synced. For anything stored only on the device, like downloads or files outside the cloud, copy them to a computer or an SD card so nothing important lives in one place.
Before you bring a phone in, confirm the backup is current, write down or remember your passcode (we often need it to test the repair), and know your account password. If your repair involves the logic board, turning off Find My iPhone or your Android equivalent ahead of time saves a step.
